July 2011 - The government of the Maldives has imposed a national ban on all types of shark fishing.
The announcement of the ban drew applause when it was made at a meeting of the BOBLME Sharks Working Group from July 5 to 7 in Malé, capital of the Maldives.

The first of its kind, the meeting brought together national organisations and concerned NGOs to discuss national plans of action to preserve sharks.
Representatives of six of the eight BOBLME nations went to the meeting, their attendance underwritten by the BOBLME Project.
There was a great deal of enthusiasm from shark experts to return home and submit concepts for following the Maldives’ lead. Collapse
